Woman arrested after bicyclist struck, killed in N.B.

February 21, 2011|By SEAN EMERY
NEWPORT BEACH – A woman police suspect of driving under the influence struck and killed a bicyclist Monday night, authorities said.
Danae Marie Miller was driving a Volkswagen Jetta eastbound on San Joaquin Hills Road about 6 p.m. when she collided with a bicyclist near Spyglass Road, Newport Beach Police Lt. Rob Morton said.
The bicyclist, whom authorities have described only as an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene, Morton said.
Miller, a 22-year-old Newport Coast resident, was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Morton said. She was reportedly booked into Newport Beach city jail and will be transferred to Orange County Jail, where she will be held in lieu of $100,000 bond.
"We haven't determined how the collision occurred, we just believe she was driving under the influence," Morton said.
The eastbound lanes of San Joaquin near Spyglass were closed for hours as investigators examined the scene, Morton said.
